Retailers say sales steady on day after Christmas
While the Belk store at Parkway Plaza opened at 6 a.m. store manager Richard McDonald said most shoppers didn’t arrive until the normal opening time of 10 a.m.
“The Christmas trim department was buzzing for a while because it’s 75 percent off,” McDonald said, noting the shoe department was still doing good business selling ladies’ boots, a hot fashion item this season. He said two models of Keurig coffee makers sold out prior to Christmas, and people were buying the K-Cup brand coffee, tea and hot chocolate to use with the popular kitchen item.
McDonald said the day-after Christmas sales were about even with last year, but Friday and Saturday were up over the two days before Christmas last year, with Saturday up 15 percent from Christmas Eve Day and Friday up 7 percent from the same time last year. But overall year-to-date sales are on a par with last year, McDonald said.
He hopes to see more people buying in the store the rest of this week, when many people are off from work and have time to shop and redeem gift cards, to post a small gain over the previous year.
