It's a tantalizing idea: a great cup of coffee from a brewing process that, start to finish, takes 30 seconds. Unfortunately for the good people at Aerobie, manufacturer of the new AeroPress coffee maker, there are no shortcuts to greatness.
The AeroPress consists of a sturdy plastic tube, plunger and simple filter assembly. The filter cap and paper filter snap onto the bottom of the plastic tube. Finely ground coffee is poured in through the open top, and hot water follows. A large hexagonal lip allows the brewing tube to rest on top of even large coffee mugs without fear of falling in.
Next, the hot water and coffee grounds are stirred for 10 seconds, then the plunger is inserted and pushes the coffee slowly through the filter. The pressing should take 20 to 30 seconds.
The AeroPress feels sturdy throughout this process, and it can be completed without making a mess. Cleanup was fantastically easy: Snap off the filter cap, dump the paper in the trash, push the grounds out with the plunger, and rinse each part.
