For many Iowa residents, caucus day is just another Tuesday
MUSCATINE, IOWA — Among the 75 or so people who turned out to see Newt Gingrich Tuesday morning at a coffee shop in this Mississippi River town was self-described "activist Democrat" Roberta Gabbard, 76, a retired office worker.
This is the part of the Iowa caucus process called "doing your homework," or maybe "knowing thy enemy."
Gabbard had no intention of voting for Gingrich, or Ron Paul or Rick Santorum, the other Republican presidential candidates she saw in person. She disagrees with "everything they're for," but felt a civic duty to evaluate them.
That's the high-minded approach to this first-in-the-nation caucus, in which people from 1,774 precincts gathered at 809 sites across Iowa to cast ballots Tuesday.
From the outside, it can sometimes appear as if the entire state is like Gabbard — engaged and well-informed. The reality is more mundane. One not-so-secret secret here is that, to a lot of Iowans, Tuesday was just another day.
"The vast majority of Iowans could care less," said Wesley Stalkfleet, 55, a truck driver. He wanted to caucus with Republicans but was on the road. (That's another thing about the caucus process. Unless you happen to be available at 7 p.m. on a very specific Tuesday in January, you can't participate.)
