Prior to the early 1970’s, most Americans prepared their coffee at home using either an electrical percolator, or one that sat on their stove top. The first drip coffee maker introduced for home use was the Mr. Coffee brand in 1972.
Not fully appreciated at the time, this was a big advancement for the home coffee connoisseur. The drip coffeemaker overcame a major problem facing all percolators. Namely, the percolator design allowed brewed coffee to come into direct contact with heat, often causing the beverage to burn.
Electric Coffee Maker – Inner WorkingsMost electric coffee makers work according to the same basic principle. A reservoir contains cold water which moves through a thin flexible hose to a heating chamber, usually made of aluminum, where the water is heated to just below the boiling point. The heat creates pressure, and the resulting siphoning affect moves the heated water up through an insulated hose to the spray head. The water exits the spray head onto the ground coffee in a basket, where it passes through the filter and drips into the carafe. The size, or wattage, of the heating element determines how much water gets heated, how quickly it will heat and the temperature it will reach before exiting the spray head. The type of metal used in the heating chamber, aluminum or copper, can also affect the transfer of heat the water.

The Keurig question: What to do with those used coffee cartridges?
If you received a one-cup coffee maker — or a box of coffee for one — as a Christmas gift, by now you likely have brewed through and tossed out plenty of those little capsules, and perhaps you’ve started to wonder about the environmental impact and the value of convenience.
Turns out that many people have opted for that convenience: In the 12 months ending in November, nearly 46% of the dollars going toward the purchase of coffee or espresso makers went to single-serve machines, according to NPD Group, a market research firm.
Keurig, a major player in the one-cup coffee business, reports that research it commissioned indicated that 13% of all U.S. offices have one of its brewers.
The company confronts the green issue head-on, saying on its website: “As the single-cup coffee market and our Keurig brewing systems grow in popularity, we understand that the impact of the K-Cup portion pack waste stream is one of our most significant environmental challenges.”
